NeuroAIDS celebrated its first birthday last month. The site was intended to be an experiment that would test whether it would be possible to create a virtual community around a focused research interest.

Established by SCIENCE OnLine and funded by a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health, this "experimental" website has proven to be a viable option for researchers who wish to publish their work on-line. Also, it served as a fertile ground to apply digital workflow in the field of scientific publishing and to try out a number of software tools.

This editorial reviews the accomplishments we made over the past year. We also share what we learned in the process and what our future plans are.

What have we accomplished?
Since May 1998, one article has been published monthly in the field of NeuroAids. We alternated the format between reviews and question and answer (Q&A) pieces. Every paper was peer-reviewed prior to publication. We covered a number of topics in the field of NeuroAIDS research, spanning from basic science topics (like "Role of Viral Proteins in HIV-1 Neuropathogenesis with Emphasis on Tat") to more clinical areas (such as "HIV-associated Peripheral Nervous System Complications").

Besides original content, we also deployed on the site a number of software tools to help viewers locate information quickly and exchange information with each other. A "
