Acambis smallpox vaccine linked to HIV fight

Yahoo! Finance

Acambis PLC (Nasdaq: ACAM, UK:ACM), the U.K. biotechnology company that supplies smallpox vaccine to the U.S. government, said Friday it will investigate whether the vaccine can also help prevent HIV infection. Acambis shares rose sharply early Friday after reports Thursday that a U.S. study showed Wyeth Inc.'s smallpox vaccine could prevent contraction of HIV, the virus that can lead to full-blown AIDS. Acambis said in a statement that it's in discussions with researchers at George Mason University in the U.S. on further collaboration to confirm their early findings.
