Merck, Aventis combine vaccine candidates New York Times Merck & Co. Inc. and Aventis SA said on Thursday they would combine their two leading AIDS vaccine candidates in a new clinical trial that will begin later this year. The decision to pool resources follows tests on rhesus macaque monkeys indicating that the two vaccines given together stimulate a greater immune response against HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, than either used alone.
