This Week's Researchers [What is this?]
From Science:
AIDS vaccine trial produces disappointment and confusion. VaxGen announces initial results of its Phase III AIDS vaccine trial. February 24, 2003. However, there was a statistically significant reduction of HIV infection in vaccinated non-white, non-Hispanic volunteers. Env induces virus expression from resting CD4+ T cells isolated from HIV-infected individuals. Production of infectious virus from resting CD4+ T cells isolated from HIV-infected individuals can be induced following exposure of these cells to HIV-1 recombinant (oligomeric gp140) envelope protein and is not associated with markers of classic T cell activation, proliferation, or apoptosis.

Sexual behavioral interventions and STI treatment did not reduce the incidence of HIV in Uganda. February 25, 2003. Behavioral interventions alone or together with sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) interventions, and routine government health services and community development activities on HIV-1 and other STIs in rural Uganda were not sufficient to reduce the incidence of HIV-1.
