HIV-specific CD8+ T cell proliferation is coupled to perforin expression and is maintained in nonprogressors. The small group of HIV-infected people who receive no treatment and yet show no signs of illness for years appear to have increased proliferative capacity of HIV-specific CD8+ T cells linked to enhanced effector function, than most clinical progressors who cannot control the virus.

Natural resistance to HIV: HIV-specific IgA is present in HIV-exposed, persistently seronegative (HEPS) individuals and neutralizes primary strains of HIV-1 in vitro. IgA exclusively bound an epitope within gp41 corresponding to the leucine zip motif in the alpha-helical region.
